Kirsten Bernthal Booth - Defensive Systems and Tactics Workshop - Recording

This Workshop featured Kirsten Bernthal Booth, Head Coach of Creighton, and took place on June 26, 2020.

Like most people in the NCAA volleyball world, I've noticed how much success Kirsten has had at Creighton. With 5-straight top-25 seasons, Kirsten has built Creighton from 3-23 to one of the strongest programs in the country. They've been strong on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, but their 2019 team was particularly good at stopping opponents- holding them to just a 0.156 hitting efficiency and a 53.8% Sideout Efficiency.

So I emailed Kirsten and asked if I could pick her brain about defense and she graciously agreed.

In this Coaches Workshop, Kirsten and I will broke down video of Creighton's defense from multiple matches to see and understand more about what her team is doing. We used several matches from the 2019 Creighton regular season and NCAA Tournament as case studies to see how principles such as:

  1. Serving philosophy and tactics.

  2. Blocking tactics and individual moves.

  3. Defensive systems and positioning.

  4. Individual defensive moves.

  5. Transitioning from digging to attacking.

Applied in those matches. The discussion among the all-college-coach audience brought out a lot of good lines of conversation, such as Staff Management, In-Game Coaching, and Personal Growth as a coach.

Along with the video recording, this download includes the 10page mini-ebook that summarizes the major takeaways along with video timestamps and images for reference. Enjoy!
